School feeding

Children concentrate better when they're fed
Many children in rural Kenya go to school having nothing but a cup of watery tea for breakfast. Having some food in the morning helps them to concentrate and get good grades.
There is also much better attendance because of the free porridge. Many who would stay at home are now coming just for the porridge, and therefore getting to classes more often.

This programme now feeds around 1'800 pupils daily

Every morning break, the children from Kigama, Musinaka and Ebbiba primary schools line up to wash their hands and collect a cup of porridge served by the prefects. For many children, this is the first meal of the day. School feeding improves school grades and attendance, while also helping children to grow and stay healthy.

Since April 2007, this project has been running at Kigama primary school (Sabatia district). Originally set up by a team of international students, the project was handed over to Community Outreach Centres to administer. Since then Community Outreach has extended the programme to include Ebbiba and Musinaka primary schools (Emuhaya district) through ConnectSwiss funding.
