A classroom Community Outreach built for a primary school

Quality buildings for a new generation
In rural Kenya over 80% of the people live on less than $1 a day. Fortunately, the Kenyan Government introduced free primary education for all in 2003. However, this policy doesn't pay for school buildings or repairs. In Bunyore, most schools have been built by the community many years ago, and are now in a terrible state. Some are even beyond repair, as they are dilapidated mud structures.

At the mud schools, the floors are often full of sandfleas (known as "jiggers" locally) which infect pupils' feet, as few have shoes.

The government has made some money available through the Constituency Development Fund, but it is not enough to cover all schools. Those that do receive assistance seldom receive enough to meet all their construction needs.

In 2005, Community Outreach repaired 11 walls at Ikumu Primary School and laid 4 cement floors at a total cost of around 2'200 USD. The following year, 4 new toilets were built for them, just in time to replace the old ones that had collapsed! In 2007 ConnectSwiss constructed a classroom and 5 toilets at Ebbitsi Primary School. It also put in three concrete floors at Ebulamba Primary school.
