Where we work
ConnectSwiss and Community Outreach focus on rural development. It works in coordination with local administration so that efforts are maximised and duplication is avoided, e.g. government health facilities and schools in Western Kenya have a very active HIV/AIDS awareness and treatment campaign so Community Outreach does not have a major focus on this subject.

Some facts and figures

- Over 90% of roads are dirt roads and the area receives high rain fall. This makes it hard to get to hospital and hard for people to get goods to market.
- Average household (5 people) income US$28 p/month
- Average farm size, to support 5 people, 0.2 hectare or 1/2 acre
- 2% of households have electricity
- None of the households have piped water
Community Outreach has opened 13 community wells in Bunyore


- Doctor: patient ratio can be less than 1: 250'000
- Government health facilities are stretched coping with malaria, typhoid and AIDS.
Children's Health is a strong focus for Community Outreach

- Fewer than 1 in 7 children complete secondary school due to lack of fees.
Community Outreach promotes free secondary education for poor students

- It is a malaria endemic region, child mortality for under five exceeds 12% in some areas.
Community Outreach is very active in mosquito net distribution.
